‘… Monday burn Millay, Wednesday Whitman, Friday Faulkner, burn ’em to ashes, then burn the ashes’ (Bradbury 6).
Guy Montag is a fireman in a world where they are expected to start fires rather than put them out. His fuel? Books, now illegal, and the houses they are hidden in. Montag never questions his orders and typically performs his job with great enthusiasm. After a hard day’s work, he returns home to his wife and her television “family.”
Until one day, he stumbles across Clarisse, an odd new neighbor, and his routine, somehow both mundane and destructive, is interrupted forever.
